2010 Junior Varsity Girls Schedule
JV Soccer
Game Recaps 2010 Preview: After
completing two straight weeks of soccer tryouts and practices, the Parkway West JV girls soccer team were ready to take on
their competitive, 24-game Spring 2010 schedule. Led by captains Jessica Stevens and Kelly Greene, this talented
group of six juniors, twelve sophomores, and one freshman boast an exciting 80 minutes of hard work, determination, and passion
for the game. As excitement surrounding the beginning of the season mounts, the Longhorns prepare to take on stiff competition
in the Northwest Junior Varsity Soccer Tournament hosted by Northwest High School.
March 23, 2010 - Eureka Wildcats
5, Parkway West Longhorns 0 Despite their match being
postponed due to the wrath of Mother Nature, the Parkway West Longhorns did not let the weather conditions sully their spirits
going into their first game of the season against the Eureka Wildcats. With several players sidelined due to practice
ineligibility, West was shorthanded but eager to show their physical and mental toughness. However, the Wildcats had
other plans in mind. They scored two quick goals in the first half despite the hardy efforts of goalkeeper Mackenzie
"Mac Daddy" Gordon and put tremendous pressure on West's defensive half. After re-grouping at halftime, the
Longhorns set out with renewed energy and desire to even the score. Center midfielders Kelly "Weirdness"
Greene and Katie Caragher led the offensive onslaught looking to set up forwards Emily "Freshman" Basler
and Jessica "Reh" Stevens for some goals. However, Eureka's cohesiveness and fast play was too much.
Despite suffering three goals in the second half, the Parkway West Longhorns showed an eagerness to improve and a desire
to show their true potential that is rarely seen at the JV level. Their next game will be against one of their school
district rivals, the Parkway North Vikings.
March 24, 2010
- Parkway North Vikings 1, Parkway West 1 (West Wins in Penalty Kicks) Having walked off the field with a sour taste in their mouths the day before, Parkway West was
determined to experience the sweet taste of victory against their cross-town foes, the Parkway North Vikings. As the
whistle sounded, the Longhorns moved down the field like a stampede. Completing solid passes, pressuring the defense,
and making great runs off the ball, it looked as though the Longhorns would not be denied their first victory
of the season. However, the Longhorn defense watched a slow shot from inside the penalty box trickle far post,
putting the Vikings ahead and illustrating West's susceptibility to a contagious form of Cement Feet Syndrome. With seven
minutes left in the first half, "Creeper" Stevens crept up the left side of the field and made a great pass
to Erin "Smiley Face" Pietrowski in the penalty box, who placed it in the back of the net. The pace
of the rest of the game was dominated by Parkway West. The Viking offense was stifled by the suffocating defense
of Claire "Big Foot" Toomey, Taylor "Darn Tootin'" Rose, Molly Dean, and Ashley "Ehem Ehem" Roh.
Despite taking ten shots throughout the game, only one could find the back of the net. Becuase of tournament
rules, the game went directly to penalty kicks. In what would prove to be an outcome of epic proportions, "Mac
Daddy" Gordon, Katie "Cold as Ice" Caragher, and Molly Dean all buried their penalty kicks. However,
it was the Longhorn goalkeeper that propelled West to its first W with a dramatic FIVE Penalty Kick saves. Swelling
with pride and enthusiasm, the JV girls prepared to take on Fox High School in the Consolation game of the Northwest JV Soccer
tournament.
March 26, 2010
- Parkway South Patriots 1, Parkway West Longhorns 0 After
the postponement of their Consolation game against Fox High School due to rain, the JV soccer team looked to refocus
its anger for the weather into hard-nosed, unified play against the Parkway South Patriots. The Longhorns, desirous
of going 3-0 versus the other Parkway JV teams, were all wound up and ready to go. In the first half, both teams
were evenly matched and found themselves tied at the end of 35 minutes, 0 - 0. However, the second half
did not go the way of the Longhorn. The eleventh minute found a shot from a Patriot player at the top of the penalty
box that careened off the bottom of the crossbar and across the endline. Unable to cohesively put together a counterattack,
the score remained 1 - 0 in favor of Parkway South. Brightened up by home baked cookies, Parkway West was
optimistic about the changes they needed to make for their next game.
March 30, 2010
- Parkway North Vikings 0, Parkway West Longhorns 2 The
Parkway West Longhorns met the Parkway North Vikings for a second time in two weeks on Tuesday after a tough loss to Parkway
South on Friday. Knowing how close their match against North was the preceeding week, West was determined
to strike early in order to avoid the necessity for heroics later in the game. Concentrating on passing to each
others feet and moving off the ball, the Longhorns were confident in their ability to control the tempo of the game. Forward
"Creeper" Stevens sprinted her way to countless breakaway opportunities while West's offensive half put
up a barrage of shots that left the Viking defense scrambling to adjust. Collecting a successful pass from Allie
"Lefty" Wyland, Sam "You Tube Sensation" Peterson knocked the ball to the back of net like a seasoned veteran.
Not knowing how to contain her excitement, Peterson blankly exclaimed, "I've never scored a goal before!"
Two minutes later, "Lefty" Wyland scored a goal of her own, rebounding a cross from Claire "Big Foot"
Toomey. The Longhorns controlled the second half with an iron fist and came away with their second win of the season
with a score of 2 - 0.
March 31, 2010
- Fort Zumwalt West 3, Parkway West Longhorns 0 After
their thrilling victory versus the Parkway North Vikings on Monday, the Parkway West Longhorns looked to make it two in a
row versus the Fort Zumwalt West Jaguars. The team was overwhelming excited to be playing on the stadium field and hoped
that this excitement would carry onto the field. However, it became quickly noticable that the Longhorns had their hands
full. Unable to hold back the intense offensive pressure of the Jaguars, the Longhorns allowed two goals at the end
of the first half and one goal in the second half for a final score of 3 - 0 in the Jaguars' favor. Parkway West seeks
to avenge their first loss of the season against the Eureka Wildcats tomorrow at Eureka.
April 1, 2010
- Eureka Wildcats 3, Parkway West Longhorns 0 With
5 games behind them, the JV girls soccer team was revved up for their second match with the Eureka Wildcats.
Their team play and motivation to outwork their opponents had improved greatly over the past week and was about to be
put to the test yet again. After being scored against in the fourth minute of the game, the Longhorns could
have easily folded. However, they picked up their energy, fought harder for 50-50 balls, and put pressure on the opposing
team's defense. The Longhorns went into the second half with a 2 goal deficit and a chip on their shoulder.
With the West defense holding the Wildcats to 1 shot on a goal in the second half, the final whistle found another loss
for the Longhorns 3 - 0. Unsatisfied with their second performance against the Wildcats, the Longhorns
set their minds on preparing for their upcoming game against McCluer North on Monday and ending their two game losing
streak.
April 6, 2010 - Webster
Groves Statesmen 1, Parkway West Longhorns 0 Due to
Kelly "Weirdness" Greene's loss by Knock Out to Mother Nature, the Longhorn's game versus McCluer North was postponed
to a later date in the season. The JV team utilized this extra time to prepare for their Suburban South Conference game
against the Webster Groves Statesman. With inside knowledge of their opponent's offensive and defensive formations,
the Longhorns felt very prepared and confident about their chances. Immediately after the kickoff, West epitomized their
frequent cheer "DO WORK!" Led by the heroic efforts of "Weirdness" Greene (playing man to man on
one of the Statesmen), the Longhorns followed the game plan to every detail. Michelle "Cookie Monster" Romero
and "Creeper" Stevens led the offensive attack, creating several shot opportunities. However, with any unlucky
bounce of the ball and a gust of wind, the Statesmen found themselves on top 1 - 0 at halftime. After a rousing speech
and a sprint onto the field, the Longhorns looked to capitalize in the second half. Katie "Cold as Ice"
Caragher, Kaleigh "Jurge" Jurgensmeyer, and Claire "Big Foot" Toomey kept the Statesmen to a
measly two shots on goal while Tricia "Monet" Bogowith and Katie Slimack aided the transition game. As
relentless as the Longhorns were throughout the game and as tough as they played, they could not finish their offensive
attacks. After a hard fought, well played game, the Longhorns suffered their third loss in a row, bringing their overall
record to 2 - 5 - 0.
April 8, 2010
- Lafayette Lancers 2, Parkway West Longhorns 0 Looking
to rebound from their heartbreaking loss to the Webster Groves Statesmen, the Parkway West Longhorns took on a talented Lafayette
JV team on the upper soccer field. Due to several miscellaneous scheduling conflicts, the Longhorns were incredibly
shorthanded with only one substitute available during the game. The Longhorns looked to come out victorious and show
why they are one of the hardest working JV soccer teams in the area. From the beginning of the game, the defensive players
realized they were going to have their hands full. Suffering nine shots on goal in the first half alone, the defense
remained optimistic and determined to keep the ball out of the net. In the second half, Lafayette continued to pressure
the Longhorn defense and goalkeeper "Mac Daddy" Gordon. Much to the dismay of the team, Alex "Street
Clothes" Bierman, while anticipating a cross from the opposite side of the field, was injured. With
zero substitutes for the last 25 minutes of the game, the JV girls put forth a tremendous amount of heart and effort. Their
determination and will to get the job done was uncanny and gave our manager Emily "Statistics" Rothove what
she calls "geesebumps." Despite their hard work, the Longhorns lost to the Lancers 2-0.
April 12, 2010
- Nerinx Hall 3, Parkway West 0 The Parkway
West Longhorns squared off against the Nerinx Hall Markers at Nerinx Hall with a much fuller squad of players on Monday.
However, the JV squad had trouble putting together a cohesive offensive attack. After one goal in the first
half and two quick goals in the second half, the Longhorns could not muster up an answer. With the final score
3 - 0, the Longhorns look to learn from their mistakes and come out with a victory in their next contest against Marquette
on Tuesday.
April 14, 2010
- Marquette 0, Parkway West 0 The Parkway West
Longhorns took on the Marquette Mustangs on the upper field on Tuesday. In search of their thrid win of the season,
the Longhorns set out to control the temp of the game after the initial whistl. The valiant efforts of midfielders "Smiley"
Pietrowski, Ashley Steinkamp, Taylor "Darn Tootin'" Rose, and Mariana "Coachie" Montero kept the ball
moving towards forwards Stevens, Romero, and Peterson. Despite several goal opportunities, the Longhorns could not muster
up the strength to put a shot on goal. The game remained a 0 - 0 tie at the end of regulation.
April 15, 2010
- Parkway Central Colts 1, Parkway West Longhorns 2 On
a day that was characterized by tired legs, yet yearning hearts, the Parkway West Longhorns searched deep inside themselves
for a victory against their cross-town foes, the Parkway Central Colts. Sixteen agonizing days without a single
goal was weighing on the JV girls' shoulders. They were ready to put an end to a scoring drought of epic proportions.
A great deal of excitement surrounded this game for another reason. This game presented the Longhorns with an opportunity
to be 2-1 versus the other Parkway schools, an opportunity to prove that West was (almost..) best. With ample time to
warm up due to an unwanted five foot hole in the vicinity of the sideline, West seemed ready to lasso and corral the Colts
for their third victory of the season. However, it seemed as though the Longhorns were destined to continue their trend
of a slow, lackadaiscal first half. Having trouble creating a cohesive offensive attack, West's defense experienced
high pressure and finally buckled, allowing a goal within their own box. The first half ended with a disappointing
score of 1-0. Confused and bewildered at the possibility of falling short to Central, West decided to make
a change. They decided to worker harder for their teammates. They decided to make sacrifices for their teammates.
They decided that today was going to be the day to reach their coach's expectations. And it began with
a "DO WORK." The second half whistle found the determination and courage of an entirely new team of Junior
Varsity players. Their communication and movement off the ball was unparalleled as they quickly went
to work. Jessica "Creeper" Stevens and Taylor "Darn Tootin'" Rose led the attack while
Kelly "Weirdness" Greene, Kaleigh "Jurge" Jurgensmeyer, and Molly "I've got the Conch!"
Dean sought to deny Central any offensive opportunities. It was clear that West would not be denied this victory. A
deep cross from Allie "Lefty" Wyland into the penalty box gave the Longhorns the chance they needed.
"Creeper" Stevens decided to debut her much anticipated Ninja Kick, which sent the ball near post and
past the goalkeeper. Later in the half, Katie "Cold as Ice" Caragher sent a hard pass past
the Central defenders. Streaking down the field, Taylor Rose sent a left-footed shot far post that gave West both a
2-1 lead and the confidence boost they needed. "Mac Daddy" Gordon made several clutch saves to round out
an incredibly team-centered 2-1 victory. The team was so excited that they jumped on the bus and left without their
coach! The Longhorns look to continue their win streak against Duchesne on Monday.
April 19, 2010 - Duchesne Pioneers 0, Parkway West Longhorns 0 The Parkway West Longhorns played the
Duchesne Pioneers to 0-0 tie. Mackenzie Gordon came up big at the end of
the second half to secure her second shutout of the season.
April 20, 2010 - Seckman Jaguars 0, Parkway West Longhorns 1 The Parkway West
Longhorns traveled to Imperial, Missouri to take on the Seckman Jaguars on Tuesday. Coming off a disappointing tie against
the Duchesne Pioneers, the Longhorns were looking to become more offensive minded and put a few soccer balls in the back of
net. West made it their goal to strike early and often. And strike early they did! At the receiving end
of a monstrous punt by "Mac Daddy" Gordon, Jessica Stevens once again pulled out her patented Ninja Kick to slip
the ball past the opposing goalkeeper 7 minutes into the first half. Scoring opportunities by Katie Caragher, Taylor
Rose, Allie Wyland, Erin Pietrowski, and Emily Basler kept the Jaguars defense on their heels while Kaleigh Jurgensmeyer commanded
the defense from the sweeper position. The 1 - 0 victory marked the Longhorns fourth win of the season and Mackenzie
Gordon's third shutout.
April 28, 2010
- McCluer North 0, Parkway West 3 After
the St. Joseph JV soccer tournament was cancelled due to excessive rain over the weekend, the Parkway West Longhorns were
excited to get out on the field again. On Tuesday, the Longhorns took on McCluer North as the result
of a rain postponement. West looked to continue their solid hustle and unified play with a victory, which would extend
their win / tie streak to 5 games. The very beginning of the game saw an incredibly dedicated team that smelled
the scent of possible victory. Putting pressure on the McCluer North defense, "Cookie Monster" Romero finally
broke free and placed a perfect pass on the foot of "Creeper" Stevens. Without a second guess, Stevens
put the ball in the back of the net and the Longhorns on the scoreboard. With courageous performances by center
midfielders Erin "Belated Birthday Girl" Pietrowski and "Weirdness" Greene, stopper Katie "Cold as
Ice" Caragher, and sweeper "Jurge" Jurgensmeyer, the central corridor was completely controlled
by the Longhorns. Going into the second half, the JV girls wanted more. Quick breakaways by Taylor "Darn
Tootin'" Rose put the McCluer North defense on their heels. Rose's heads up play deep in the box gave
Stevens an easy rebound and her second goal of the game. Several minutes later, a long through ball by Greene set Rose
off to the races along the right flank. With a swing of her foot, the ball went careening over the opposing
goal keeper and into the net, top-shelf. Defenders Ashley "Ehem Ehem" Roh and Molly Dean took
the speedy McCluer North outside midfielders out of the opposing offensive arsenal. A sleu of outside midfielders
gave the Longhorns numerous opportunities: "Street Clothes" Bierman, Ashley "Bobble Head"
Steinkamp, Emily "Freshman" Basler, Katie Slimack, and "Crazy Lady Laugh" Montero. "Mac
Daddy" Gordon and "Lefty" Wyland recorded the shutout and gave the Longhorns their fifth win of the season.
April 28, 2010
- Ursuline Academy 5, Parkway West 0 After
a 0-0 first half tie, the Parkway West Longhorns fell to Ursuline Academy by a score of 5-0.
May 3, 2010
- Pattonville 0, Parkway West 0 May 4, 2010
- Lindbergh 1, Parkway West 0 May 6, 2010
- Ladue 0, Parkway West 0 May 7, 2010
- Fox 0, Parkway West 1 In
the second to last week of the spring 2010 girl's soccer season, the Parkway West Longhorns met four teams in five days and
ultimately looked to better their tempo of play and overall record. Their first contest of the week found them wanting
more. After absolutely dominating the second half and having several scoring opportunities towards the end of the game, the
Longhorns simply could not get the ball to the back of the net. Their 0-0 tie versus the Pattonville Pirates left
West wanting more and pumped them up for next contest versus the Lindbergh Flyers. After a hard fought battle and suffering
a goal in the last 5 minutes of the game, the West saw their potential 0-0 tie turn into a 1-0 loss. However, amid excessively
physical play, questionable calls, and several tense moments, the Longhorns could easily hold their heads high and be proud
about their performance and sportsmanship displayed throughout the game. After a much needed day of rest, the JV team
traveled to Ladue for an afternoon game. The match ended in a 0-0 tie after the Longhorns failed to create a cohesive
attack against their opponents. Their fourth game in five days was the consolation game of the Northwest JV soccer tournament
against Fox High School. In the middle of the first half, Taylor "Darn Tootin'" Rose's valiant effort in trying
to win a 50-50 ball resulted in serious injury. Taylor's act of bravery and courage fueled the JV girls to
come together and win the game in her name. Katie Caragher's free kick goal from outside the box and the Longhorns'
commanding performance in the second half proved too much for Fox to overcome. At the end of the week, the
Longhorns moved to a record of 6-9-4.
May 12, 2010
- Rockwood Summit 3, Parkway West 1 The
Parkway West Longhorns lost to Rockwood Summit 3-1. Jessica Stevens had the lone goal on a fantastic breakaway effort.
May
13, 2010 - Kirkwood 2, Parkway West 1 In
their last game of the season, the Parkway West Longhorns fell to the Kirkwood Pioneers 2-1. Katie Slimack had the Longhorn's
only goal. The Longhorns finished their season with an overall record of 6-11-4. Congratulations on a successful
season!!
